Mask by Arthur Lanyon Thursday 16th July to Saturday 1st August MASK' by Arthur Lanyon, a newcomer to the Bristol art scene. Having studied in Cardiff and lived in Cornwall, now settles in Bristol bringing with him a bold and refreshing take on abstract painting. 'MASK' is a figurative painting exhibition, with abstract qualities. Bold colours and marks draw likeness to painters such as Francis Bacon and Philip Guston. Lanyons fascination with African masks is evident within his vibrant canvases which reveal gaping mouths, high cheek bones and wide eyes. Currently, these paintings are all driven by visual experience, with a fine line between what and how to paint. I begin with a figurative approach through observation, which is important to me formally, as a structure, but its in the making, the trial and error, that my interest really lies. Preview Date: Thursday 16th July 6 - 8.30pm [ back to exhibitions ] |
