Hank Adlam was a wartime FAA fighter pilot and flew aircraft such as Hurricanes, Hellcats and Corsairs from aircraft Carriers in the Atlantic, Artic, Mediterranean andific threatres of war. On retiring from the Royal Navy, he was a commercial manager with Short, Bros & Harland inUlster and was there, in 1950's, that he began to paint in oils. He became a successful exhibitor at the Royal Ulster Academy but work pressure and business travel forsed him to give up painting entirely. He moved with his family to his home city of Bristol where he worke as Commertcial Manager at Rolls-Royce for a number of years until he left to be appointed as the Bursar of Clifton College. After thirteen years as Bursar, he retired early for health reasons in 1983. However, retirement gave him the opportunity to begin painting again in earnest.Since then his portrayal of ships at the sea and coastal scenes have proved very popular at exhibitions and at art galleries in the south of England and in Wales. Drawing upon memories of his years as a naval aviation pilot, heextended his range to include paintings of aircraft and ships in wartime situations. He was invited twice by the FAA Museum at Yeovilton to put on an exhibition of his aviation and marine paintings and sold thirty-eight paintings there and subsequently received a number of commissions. Five of his larger paintings have been purchased for the Officer's Mess at theRoyal Naval Art Station at Yeovilton and are hung in the newly built Wardroom. In 2007, Hank was invited to exhibit two paintings at Christies when one was purchased by the Victory Services Club in London to be hung in their main public room. This painting was particularly admirer by Baroness Thatcher during her visit to the club on the occasion of its centenary.
