Bedminster & Beyond Gerald Cains 3rd April 2nd May 2009 Gerald Cains is a realist artist who has exhibited widely, including the Royal Academy and the RWA. His paintings are mainly townscape, the sea and landscape. Gerald will be showing a series of traditional works, mainly oils, which he has been working on for fortyfive years. This show demonstrates Geralds interest in the unloved and decaying back streets found within the urban landscape. Gerald stays true to the English pallet by using greys and earthy colours capturing the sombre beauty found within the British townscape. During the 60s Gerald taught at Bedminsters Bristol Technical School It was during this time that Gerald became inspired by the dilapidated buildings and neglected lands found within Bedminster. He worked from sketches and visual memory to produce a number of realist paintings of local scenes such as Boot Lane (attached image). One of these images was Stillhouse Lane which depicted a local bombsite left many years awaiting clearance. This was the first of a number of his paintings selected for exhibition at Londons Royal Academy, Summer Exhibition 1964. Gerald has had and expansive career having been selected for numerous national exhibitions and exhibiting in venues such as The Royal Academy of Arts, London, The RWA and the Mall Galleries, London. In 1985, Cains was selected as one of the finalists in the Hunting Award to British Artists. [ back to exhibitions ] |
