'Happy People' - Viv Young and Sally Sparks
8th September - 20th October 2007

This exhibition will feature unique costumes, artefacts and photographs of Miao minorities of south-west China, collected over a period of ten years by textile artists Sally Sparks and Viv Young.

The beautiful and rarely seen festival costumes and intricate embroideries of the Miao people of South West China will go on show in Bristol from 7th September until 20th October.

Sally Sparks and Viv Young are two Bristol textile artists who have forged a link with the Miao people and have spent ten years researching costumes, artefacts and photographs of the minority people, also known as the Happy People. Photographs show their vibrant way of life and cultural practices.

The collection will go on show at The Grant Bradley Gallery and the exhibition will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Cllr Royston Griffey. A series of talks and lectures by Sally and Viv will be held during the course of the exhibition.

London-based classical musician Fung-Yin Wong will attend the opening night to play the Qin (pronounced Chin), a 7-stringed zither whose origins date back 3000 years.
