'Amazon Paintings and Cut Outs' - Ros and David Cuthbert 5th September - 2nd November |
||||
Ros is showing works mainly on paper in mixed media acrylics and watercolour, gouache, Chinese ink and sand. Her paintings are inspired by a trip to the Amazon in 2004 when the David and Ros were guest artists on a Swan-Hellenic cruise. Before the cruise itself they spent five nights in the rainforest and it was there that Ros was deeply impressed by the silence and sense of the archaic in the flooded forest, which they visited in small boats. The paintings are from memory, with some reference to studies and photos made on the site, but the making was a process of summoning up images of the forest from the wetness and flow of the paint |
David is showing his most recent work, which has evolved out of a series of paintings concerned with food, eating and drinking. On board cut with a jigsaw, the new paintings are acrylic and mixed media. The images are still mostly derived from the pleasures of the table but one or two have also strong landscape references. The abandonment of the rectangle means that the paintings are no longer windows into an imaginary or illusory world but objects sharing space with the viewer. Shadows cast on the wall wherever they are hung in changing light gives the work a quality approaching that of sculpture; indeed the most recent work is beginning to be constructed in relief. |
